Since 2012, the Environmental Health Project (EHP) has been defending public health in the face of shale gas development. During that time, we have consistently fought to keep public health protections central to the conversation, growing our expertise, services, and geographic reach in the process. And while we have officially dropped “Southwest Pennsylvania” from our name, that’s exactly where our roots are–and will always be–no matter how far we extend our support.

To mark this important milestone, we hosted an exciting slate of quarterly events: a public health summit focusing on how to translate existing knowledge into sound, health-protective policy; the launch of a policy-focused white paper demonstrating how public health was not protected during Pennsylvania’s shale gas boom (and how we can do better moving forward); and an anniversary dinner. Visit the links below to learn more.

It has been an honor to celebrate with you throughout 2022 as we highlighted the steps and people who helped EHP become the go-to organization for resources on the health impacts of shale gas development. Whether you partner with us in community advocacy, health and wellness education, or public health policy, we are grateful that you are part of the amazing network of allies who will be at the table with us over the next 10 years.

Public Health Summit

On February 22, 2022, EHP hosted Shale Gas and Public Health: Translating Science into Policy, a virtual public health summit. The summit was led by four experts in the fields of child health and development, endocrine disruption, environmental economics, and environmental justice. Legislative Breakfast & White Paper Reveal

On April 13, 2022, EHP staff traveled to Harrisburg, PA, for a shared breakfast with state legislators. EHP unveiled a new white paper featuring shale gas development and its impact on public health, as well as what legislators can do to better serve their constituents moving forward. Learn more about this event at the link below.

Anniversary Dinner

On September 15, 2022, EHP hosted an anniversary celebration at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh, PA. It was a joy to gather with EHP partners, funders, staff, and friends to mark 10 years of defending public health. We enjoyed recounting the challenges and successes of the past decade while looking ahead to a continued mission to protect families and communities from health impacts.

Whether you were with us to celebrate in person or sending your support from afar, EHP is grateful to be on this journey with you!

10th Anniversary Year in Review Report

2022 was a milestone year for EHP. As we mark the end of our first decade, we know it is only the beginning of our work. New markets for shale gas are now expanding, and we know that increased demand for shale gas will mean increased  extraction activities, and therefore increased health risks. EHP is committed to providing fact-based resources to impacted communities everywhere.

As this year comes to a close, take one more look back at our 10th Anniversary Year in Review report.
